I’ve been wearing glasses for 40 years, and today I got my first set of contacts. I’m going to be playing trumpet onstage next month in a production of
Aida
, and since 3000-year-old Egyptian herald trumpet players didn’t wear glasses back in the day, I can’t wear glasses on stage. I can see how I might get used to wearing them, though. The peripheral vision is amazing, particularly when driving. But now I can’t see a damned thing up close, and I had to buy a cheap pair of reading glasses. I will likely go back to glasses; it’s just too easy to wake up and put them on, and the whole near/far vision thing is just too easy. But for now, this is definitely an interesting experiment. I might adopt them for photography and see how that goes.

The peripheral vision messed me up for awhile after I got contacts. I still wear glasses at night and when I’m too lazy to put contacts in.

that whole putting them on in the morning is the only reason I wear glasses most of the time.

I liked wearing contacts but I just can’t get past 8 hours without them seriously irritating my eyes. It has been a few years though, maybe I should give it a try again next time I get an eye exam.

Even with progressive bifocals, I still put my head down and look over the top of my glasses for small things, particularly on my phone. I keep doing that out of habit, even though I can’t see anthing clearly closer than three feet.

I’m supposed to wear them progressively longer each day. Today is four hours. Tomorrow 6-8. Once I can go a whole day, I can put them away and only wear them when I need or want to. They want to make sure I can tolerate them before I
have
to wear them. No problems so far. I also have no sunglasses now. I’ve got a nice pair or Rx shades, but I can’t wear them now.

Sometimes I try to push my non-existent glasses up my nose.

Imma need some context for that pic. What is it from?
And also, as a fellow glasses wearer, and kind of weird guy, the temptation not to get decorative contact lenses would be too much.

Be careful. I had contacts as a teen and one day when taking them out, they were stuck on my eye ball. I’d pinch and pull but it HURT like no other pain I’ve ever felt. After a few minutes of pulling/hurting, I looked down and saw the contact in the sink. I was pulling on the skin of my eyeball. Never wore them again.

You should try a bunch of different brands. My optometrist had me try a bunch of different ones before I found a brand that worked for me.

It’s best to see most posts on Oppo through glasses.

You will get used to them reading up close, I have I’ve been wearing them sense 2006-07. It gets easier to use them

Contacts are good if you’re doing anything outside. Close vision is terrible. But did the Egyptians have trumpets?

I’m sorry, but I laughed. They guy who taught me how to wear them said to look up when you’re doing it just to make sure they’re in or out.

Depends on the post.

Actually, they did. They wouldn’t be been able to play Verdi’s music, though.
We’re going to be playing horns similar to this one. They are terrible, horrible, no good, very bad instruments, but they look cool onstage.

The range of decorative contacts out there is astounding. There’s a booth every year at DragonCon that does nothing but, and they have probably five times your picture worth of kerazy shiit.

I got contacts for the first time 14 years ago.
Last year was miserable. I could never get them to focus well enough, which led to me playing with them with my fingers to try to get them to line up correctly, which resulted in my eyes hurting often.
This year I got some full plastic rimmed large lens glasses (Rayban New Wayfarer) and I love them. I don’t wear contacts anymore except when I’m going to spend a lot of time outside and want sunglasses. I plan on getting prescription sunglasses next year and then I’ll probably just stop wearing contacts altogether.
The clarity of contacts is nice, but staring at a computer all day long for 4 years with poor vision and contacts has taken its toll, glasses are better IMO

I used to be okay, but after a few years of sitting in front of a computer all day I ran into the same issue

I have a nice pair of Rx sunglasses, but it does become somewhat of a pain to always carry two pairs of glasses. I will weart these as long as I need to get used to them, then probably put them away until the performances. But I can definitely see how they would be good outdoors. They also gave me a single lens for my left eye with close up vision. I’m going to experiment with different lenses for photography—one for looking through the viewfinder, the other for looking at the camera up close. We’ll see how that goes.

The stage ones look a little impractical to play. Also, history is super cool.

Contacts really only matter for outdoors because I can wear sunglasses. I have excessively nice sunglasses, I'm really sad I never get to use them anymore. Granted during the week I rarely get out in the sun these days....

my mom’s worn them for decades and gave me the same advice. But, still.

One time I was pretty messed up and it had made my eyes really dry. I went into the bathroom to put some saline solution in my contacts to moisten them and clean them. Since I was so chemically imbalanced I put both in one eye and could not figure out why I couldn’t see or where my other contact had gone.

In that moment everything was laid bare before me and I truly understood how the world worked.
